I came across this story and I thought it summed up what a baby means to us:

The Joy of a Baby

In the midst of the doom and gloom of economic news, I want to share with you how uplifted I am after eating in a simple Roman trattoria tonight. The reason?? A baby!

Three generations settled into a table next to us…the four men at one end of the table, the four women at the other end. And at the women’s end of the table was the carriage with a sleeping baby of about 6 months. It wasn’t hard to tell who the mother was…she was paying lots of attention to her sleeping child. And beaming!

The best was yet to come. Eventually the baby awoke. Beautiful. Fat cheeks, little, sweet smiles, intense looks to each person at the table (over time). First the women adored him. I can’t tell you how struck I was by how their faces lit up when they held him, or looked at him, or talked to him. Grandmother, aunts, his mother. And then the men! One after the other they took him and smiled and stroked and they too lit up. Their joy was palpable, and it was catching.

It didn’t take long for adjoining tables to join and partake of the pleasure. An older couple leaned over and, their faces shining with delight, exclaimed over the baby. Over the course of their meal, they kept looking over and smiling with pure pleasure. So did Jim and I. And several other tables of young and old.

All is well with the world when a young baby inspires such joy and gives such pleasure. This is the way things should be.
